Although portable document formats (PDFs) are useful for reading a document in its original state, they often cannot be filled out with new information. In order to do so, you must first convert the PDF into a fillable form using the Adobe LiveCycle Designer tool that comes with Adobe Acrobat Professional. The LiveCycle Designer tool simplifies PDF formatting for the novice Adobe user and allows you to easily create new fields and edit existing ones. The tool also enables you to choose how the user can use the document once it has been filled out by allowing you to edit the “Return Method” section, which protects the document’s information.

1. Open the “Applications” folder in Finder and double-click the “Adobe Acrobat” icon.

   Click “File” and “Open” from the drop-down menu. Select the PDF file you wish to open and click “Open.”

   Click “Advanced” at the top of the menu and select “Forms” and “Make Form Fillable in Designer” from the drop-down menu.

   Click the circle next to “Import a PDF Document” and click “Next.” Click the circle next to “Maintain Editability” and click “Next.”

   Click “Fill Then Submit” in the “Return Method” section. Drag and drop the desired fields to your document and click “Save” once you are finished.

When creating a PDF in Adobe Acrobat, take measures to preserve the formatting and appearance of your document. Capture the document’s font information with Acrobat Distiller. This effort will prevent unexpected or undesired font substitutions. Test the file before you share it to discover if your PDF file will display accurately on someone else’s computer. After following a few simple steps, you can rest assured that your document will print from any computer. It’s especially useful to embed fonts in PDF files designed with commercial printing or sharing in mind.

Embedding Fonts With Adobe Distiller

1. Step 1

   Open the file containing the fonts you would like to embed in Adobe Acrobat.

2. Step 2

   Launch Acrobat Distiller by selecting “Advanced,” “Print Production,” “Acrobat Distiller.”

3. Step 3

   Navigate to the “Settings” menu.

4. Step 4

   Select “Job Options.”

5. Step 5

   Click on the “Fonts” tab.

6. Step 6

   Choose the “Embed All Fonts” option.

   Click “OK.”

   Return to Adobe Acrobat.

Test Print the Embedded Fonts

    Turn off the “Use Local Fonts” option. Make sure that “Use Local Fonts” is inactive before proceeding.

Inserting relevant data sets into your documents adds an invaluable amount of credibility and support to your work; however, you may not want the data sets to be contained within the text of the document, but rather to open in a separate window. Adobe Acrobat 9 allows you to insert a link to a data set within the text of your document and will open the data set in the same window as the document, a separate window or even allow the user to decide.

While you can’t create 3D images inside PDFs, you can embed external Universal 3D (U3D) files into them with Acrobat Pro’s 3D Tool. The users of your PDFs can then view and manipulate the 3D graphic in the PDF with Acrobat Reader or a Web browser.

Embedding a 3D Image in Acrobat Pro

1. Step 1

   Create a 3D image in Photoshop CS4 (or later versions) or another 3D graphics program, such as MicroStation, and export it to U3D format. (Or download a U3D image file from the Internet.)

2. Step 2

   Open Acrobat Pro and go to the page where you want to add a 3D image.

3. Step 3

   Click “Tools” on the menu bar, choose “Multimedia,” and then select “3D Tool” from the Multimedia fly-out menu. Draw a 3D container in the spot on the page where you want the 3D image to display. This opens the Insert 3D dialog box.

4. Step 4

   Click the “Browse” button and navigate to the directory where you saved the 3D image file. Select the file and click the “Open” button.

5. Step 5

   Click the “Show Advanced Options” check box to display options for controlling the 3D file within the PDF. Click the “Launch Settings” tab. These options control 3D image display, play, and appearance within the PDF. Use the options on the “Enable When” drop-down to control when the image begins to play. Use the options on the “Disable When” drop-down to control when the image stops playing.

   Use the options on the “Playback Style” drop-down to control where the image plays. (The options are “Play content on page” and “Play content in floating window.”) If you want a border around the image, use the “Border Width” drop-down to select a border style.

6. Step 6

   Click the “3D” tab. These options control 3D lighting, rendering and animation styles. The “Lighting Scheme” drop-down lets you choose whether to use the image file’s built-in lighting or one of Acrobat’s predefined lighting schemes.

   The options on the “Rendering Style” drop-down lets you choose the default rendering style, such as Solid, Wireframe and so on. The user can change these from the 3D controls within the PDF. The options on the “Animation Style” drop-down let you choose playback options, such as Loop (play repeatedly).

7. Step 7

   Click “OK” to embed the 3D image file into the PDF. Save the PDF file. To test the 3D image, open file in Acrobat Reader or your Web browser.

Adobe Acrobat’s Portable Document Format (PDF) allows you to create documents for distribution through several different types of media, such as print, the Web and email. But sometimes, for various security and copyright reasons, you may not want to allow users of your PDFs to print them. You can disable the PDF print function with Acrobat Pro’s security settings.

Disabling PDF Printing in Acrobat Pro

1. Step 1

   Open the PDF in which you want to disable printing in Acrobat Pro.

2. Step 2

   Click “File” on the menu bar and choose “Properties” to open the Document Properties dialog box.

3. Step 3

   Click the “Security” tab to display the Document Security section of the dialog box.

4. Step 4

   Click the “Security Method” drop-down and choose “Password Security.” This opens the Password Security–Settings dialog box.

5. Step 5

   Find the “Permissions” section of the dialog box, and then click the “Restrict editing and printing of the document. A password will be required in order to change these permission settings” check box.

   Type a password in the “Change Permissions Password” field.

   Click the “Printing Allowed” drop-down and choose “None.”

   Click “OK.” An alert dialog box appears informing you that some third-party products could override these settings. (There’s nothing you can do about this—hacking is part of life on the Internet.) Click “OK.” The Confirm Permissions Password dialog appears.

   Retype the password you entered earlier, and then click “OK.” Acrobat displays an alert dialog box informing you that the changes won’t take place until you save the document. Click “OK.” This returns you to Document Properties.

    Click “OK” to close Document Properties.

    Click “File” on the menu bar and choose “Save” to save the PDF. Printing is disabled.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 browser has come a long way since Release 6. The Internet 7 browser, which functions like a desktop, integrates video, live chat and blogs that are integrated from popular Microsoft programs such as Hotmail, Microsoft Outlook and the new “Bing” social network concept.

Installation Issues

1. Internet Explorer 7 was released in several beta versions before the first live version was released to the public. These beta versions have presented installation problems due to the fact that Microsoft finalized some enhancements that were not in the beta release. The safest way to load the actual Internet Explorer release is to remove the beta version through the Windows Control Panel “Add and Remove Software” option. After the program is uninstalled, load the updated Internet Explorer 7 version to your computer.

Internet Connection Settings

2. If you are migrating from Internet Explorer 6 to Explorer 7, the upgrade can change your Internet connection settings if you have been using dial-up services to access the Internet. The symptom of this error is non-connectivity to websites and DNS errors. The solution is to check and see if your Internet dial-up profile has changed or does not exist. You should reload your old settings by accessing Internet Explorer, click “Tools” and click the “Internet options” tab. The “Connections” tab has the information concerning your browser and how it connects to the Internet.

Malware Problems

3. Malware, spyware and other malicious viruses can hijack a browser and create havoc for any user. A new browser load or upgrade does not solve virus problems and Internet Explorer 7 is no different in this regard. The virus will attack the new browser in the form of hidden cookies. You should ensure that the computer is free of all viruses before loading Internet Explorer 7. Malware viruses have been known to completely take control of the browser causing crashes and slow connections.

Incompatible Toolbar Programs

4. There are toolbar programs that will not work with Internet Explorer 7. Part of this problem is because of licensing agreements. Third-party software companies must pay Microsoft a hefty licensing fee to bundle any type of software into its browser. To take advantage of toolbars that Internet 7 Explorer does not support, many users download an alternate browser and use the toolbars through their browser.

Trouble Displaying Web Pages

5. If you have a computer manufactured before 2007, Internet Explorer 7 will appear to operate slowly when displaying HTML pages. This problem is related to CPU speed and side bus memory allocation. The latest laptops and desktop systems are optimized through the CPU to allocate pages to new browser standards. There is an area on the CPU chip designated just for website loading and display. There are also special “buses” on the main board designated for optimization of browser speeds. Systems before 2007 did not have this paging feature. This feature is written into the Internet Explorer 7 code.

One frustrating feature of Adobe Acrobat is that with every upgrade the program changes its compression software. This means that PDF files and forms built with newer versions of Acrobat may not be compatible with older ones. However, there is a simple trick to fix your form before you save it so that friends and colleagues using Acrobat 6 can read and fill out your Acrobat 9-created forms.

1. Open the PDF you wish to turn into an Acrobat 6-compatible form.

   Select “Start Form Wizard” from the Forms menu.

   Check the box marked “Start with a PDF document” and click “Next.”

   Check the box marked “Use the current document” and click “Next.”

5. Step 5

   Follow any additional prompts to complete your form if Acrobat cannot read it automatically. Click “Close Form Editing” when it looks the way you want it to. You can always go back and edit later, if need be.

   Select “Reduce File Size” from the Document menu.

   Choose “Acrobat 6.0 or later” from the drop-down compatibility box. Click “OK.”

Recently I have been having trouble with “adobe acrobat: acroRd32.exe – application error” when shutting down. I have been very concerned about stability issues because of this error. Well I’m here to tell you, this is one of the easiest fixes you will need to do. Adobe Acrobat’s Portable Document Format (PDF) makes it easy to distribute documents to friends and colleagues for reviewing, editing and commenting. Acrobat Pro’s “Comment” feature lets you attach sticky notes, annotated pointers, circles, checkmarks and several other types of comments to specific regions on a page. In some cases, you may want to change the comment font, style and size to make comments more prevalent or to emphasize specific comments. You can change font and font size with Acrobat Pro’s Preferences feature. Text style formatting—bold, italics, etc.—is controlled from inside the comment box for each individual comment.

Changing Comment Fonts

1. Step 1

   Open Acrobat Pro.

2. Step 2

   Click “Edit” on the menu bar and choose “Preferences” to open the Preferences dialog box.

3. Step 3

   Click “Commenting” in the “Categories” column on the left side of the dialog box.

4. Step 4

   Click the “Font” drop-down and choose the desired font.

5. Step 5

   Click the “Font Size” drop-down and choose a size for the font.

   Click “OK” to close the dialog box. You have changed the font and font size for comments.

Changing Comment Type Style

   Open an existing PDF in Acrobat Pro. Click “File” on the menu bar and choose “Open” to display the Open dialog box. Navigate to the PDF, select it and then click the “Open” button.

   Click the “Comment” drop-down on the tool bar and choose “Add Sticky Note.” Click on the PDF page where you want to insert a comment. This displays a blank Sticky Note.

9. Step 3

   Type the comment text in the “Sticky Note” box.

    Select the text you want to format.

    Right-click the selected text, choose “Text Style from the pop-up menu and then select the desired style (bold, italics, underlined, etc.) from the pop-up sub-menu. The text reformats with the new style.

When there’s a need to remove or replace a watermark on a PDF document, it can be difficult to accomplish. If you don’t have the original files, a bit of doctoring may be needed for the results you desire. Here’s how to remove watermarks from PDF files using common Windows programs.

1. Use the original Microsoft Word document or Excel spreadsheet that was used to create the PDF and create a new PDF file without the watermark. If this is not possible, proceed to step 2.
2. Step 2

   Download a free trial copy of Adobe Acrobat and install it on your computer (see Resources below).

3. Step 3

   Use the program to open the PDF file.

4. Step 4

   Select ‘Remove Watermark’ and save the document.

   Convert the document into a Microsoft Word file if the above steps do not work. To do this, download the program ‘Zamzar’ (see Resources below).

   Open the new Word document in Microsoft Word.

   Delete the watermark text that overlaps the main text in the document and save the file as a PDF again. If this is not possible, proceed to step 8.

   Convert the PDF file to an image using Zamzar or by using the “print screen” key on your keyboard in Adobe Photoshop.

   Open the image in Adobe Photoshop.

    Select the watermark with the Magic Wand tool. Press “Delete” to remove it.
